Powerful Teaching by Appealing to Students’ Emotions
While teaching Fundamentals in Nursing, I became aware that most the students were excited to learn nursing and were motivated by the media’s view of nursing – fast-paced, emergency and critical care nursing. Students were often bored and unmotivated when learning about caring for elderly patients in a long-term care setting. I realized I had to appeal to their emotions. Working with a colleague who was a photographer and a singer/songwriter nurse (Deb Gauldin*), we put together a video showing a nurse caring for an elderly resident of a long-term care facility. The video display of the pictures was set to the beautiful song Tucked in Tight. This video appealed to the students’ emotions and changed their opinion about caring for the elderly and the nurses who care for elderly.
I would like to share this video with you. It is now available for you to use, free of charge.
I hope the video has the same positive effects with your students that it did for mine!
